NAME OF
ORGANISATION:
CATHOLIC WOMEN
ORGANISATION OF NIGERIA (CWON)
AIMS AND
OBJECTIVES:
This
is an umbrella organization for all women in the Catholic Church, with the aim
of promoting the religious and social upliftment of women and contribute to the
growth and development of the church and the Christian community in general.
Among the objectives of the organization are:
1.
To
strengthen the family through sound moral upbringing, collective and individual
devotions and prayers.
2.
To
foster unity, sisterly love and peaceful co-existence among all women
irrespective of origin, social and educational status.
3.
To
contribute to the Spiritual and Social growth of the church and the Christian
Community in Nigeria
BRIEF HISTORY OF
THE ORGANISATION
The
Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWON) was first inaugurated in Nigeria
on May 5th 1964 in Onitsha Archdiocese by the late Archbishop
Charles Heerey C.S.SP. In 1965 through
discussions and deliberations by Rev. Fr. Byrne the then Secretary – Catholic
Secretariat Lagos, Rev. Fr. Funnucane – the
Spiritual Director Enugu Diocese and lay women in the church, it was
decided that an international conference to chart a new course of action for
women organisation be held at Enugu.
At
the end of the conference, Chief Mrs. Theresa Hart (JP) was elected the First
Coordinator of the National Council of Catholic Women Organisation, Nigeria.
The
inauguration of the National Coordinating Committee later followed in Benin in
1974 by the late Cardinal Dominic Ekandem, the then President of Catholic
Bishops Conference of Nigeria and in 1975, the National Council of Catholic
Women Organisation (NCCWO) was inaugurated in Jos with Mrs. Angie Makinde from
Ibadan Province as the first President.
DAYS OF
MEETINGS:
Executives
meet every second Saturday of the month while the general meeting is held every
second Sunday of the month.

organization takes part in all the Parish activities:

the Parish in Deanery activities

Taking
responsibility of the Parish Missionary Child Hood Association activities.
